United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cincinnati

Independent Living Skills Training promotes independence and provides community recreational and educational opportunities. Community inclusion and participation is encouraged, as well as life- long learning. Participants actively plan classes and activities. Our goal is for participants to become connected to the community in ways that they choose.
 

Independent Living :
• helps connect you to the community.
• offers personal attendant care and transportation if necessary during program hours.
• allows you to make your own plans and pursue your interests.
• offers community activities, such as advocacy meetings.
• strives for smaller group or individual activities.
• helps you find volunteer opportunities that are suited for you.

Our service promotes increased independent skills and life long learning:
• The on-campus classes encourage individuals to become more self-directed in scheduling activities to meet their individual goals. Classes include computer-based classes, meal preparation, discussion groups, community activities, health education and creative arts. Class sessions change three times a year.
• Exploration of your own community or neighborhood is encouraged.
• Health and wellness activities provided encourage you to take control of your own health.
Advocacy/ Self Advocacy offers educational and results oriented activities on important subjects.
• Occupational therapy and speech therapy offers you support to become more independent.
Assistive devices may increase the level of independence, and we will explore these options with you.
• We will help you practice and use augmentative communication and other assistive equipment and help train your caregiver, so that you can use these at home and in the community.
• Our creative arts program mission is to foster an environment where individuals are encouraged and supported to act, work, and think creatively, as they embark on a path to personal success and professional opportunity through artistic development. We will help you nurture your creativity by connecting you to the art community and encouraging you to continue to use your talents during your at home free time.
