Advocacy/Self-Advocacy
Advocacy/ Self-Advocacy is one of the most important life skills for persons with disabilities. Self-Advocacy leads to self-determination. At the Rendigs Center, we offer many opportunities to learn self-advocacy skills and to practice Self-Advocacy and Community Advocacy for others. We are committed to new forms of leadership, where individuals with disabilities will become valuable leaders in the larger community.
Self-Advocacy
Self-Advocacy requires training and experience, and the pay-off lasts a lifetime. Participants can take classes and meet others who are also involved in advocacy. Specific Self-Advocacy issues, for example, health care, transportation or personal care, can be addressed individually with our teaching staff or with peers who are also interested in your issue. We not only help participants become more knowledgeable, but we also assist you with connecting to those community individuals or groups who may influence these issues.
Community Advocacy: National, State and Local
Community Advocacy may include connection to groups, such as:
• Leaders in Action
• Ohio Development Disabilities Council
• Hamilton County Advocacy Network
• Ohio People First

Rep. Steve Driehaus with the Advocacy Class
We are active in legislation activities, voting, writing letters in support of issues affecting people with disabilities, speaking at local and regional legislative hearings, attending city and county government meetings and speaking to local school groups.
We will help you to define the issues or problems and steps necessary to resolve them. We strongly believe that you can be your best advocate and that sometimes strength in numbers is the best approach.
This is your chance to be involved in a dynamic group of persons like yourself who want to make positive change.
